Canon Australia has today announced the latest addition to Australia’s top-selling interchangeable lens camera system1, combining renowned EOS DSLR quality in an ultra-compact body that’s fun and easy to use – the Canon EOS M. The new EOS M will launch with two specially designed new lenses – the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom lens and the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM ultra compact pancake lens – along with the ability to use the full line of Canon EF and EF-S lenses through the optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS M.

.

“The new Canon EOS M is for people who want an EOS camera with them wherever they go, ready to capture life’s moments in the highest quality,” says Rebecca Pearson, Assistant Brand Manager, Canon EOS, Canon Australia. “These people are aware of the limitations of their current compact camera or smartphone but, while they’re serious about taking great shots, they want to be lost in the moment not the camera manual. Existing EOS digital SLR camera users will also welcome the option of a compact camera body to use with their existing EF and EF-S lenses as the situation requires.”

.

The EOS M has been developed alongside the new EOS 650D digital SLR camera and shares many components, including the 18 megapixel APS-C sensor with on-chip phase detection AF and the DiG!C 5 image processor. The removal of the mirrorbox assembly and viewfinder allows the camera to be around 50% lighter and significantly smaller2 while enabling the same high level of image quality. Quality extends to renowned EOS performance features including outstanding low-light shooting with an ISO range of 100–12800 expandable to 25600 (H) and 4.3 frame-per-second high-speed burst shooting (One Shot AF).

.

“The EOS M represents 25 years of Canon EOS heritage in quality imaging and reflects feedback from users of some of the 50-million cameras and almost 80-million lenses that we have produced since 1987,” says Pearson. “We’ve taken time to develop a compact system that achieves the desired size, weight and simplicity without any compromise in EOS quality.”

.

The EOS M places control at your fingertips with a capacitive Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View II LCD monitor (approximately 1.04 million dots) with smudge-resistant coating. Multi-touch operation enables Touch Focus and Touch Shutter operation as well as familiar reviewing gestures such as "pinch-to-zoom" and "swiping" to scroll between pictures. Moreover, the Feature Guide provides simple on-screen explanations of features as they are selected.

.

Canon’s new shooting modes (Handheld Night Scene, HDR Backlight Control and Multi-Shot Noise Reduction) take multiple pictures, and combine them – in camera – to help capture a wider dynamic range, minimise the image grain or noise, and produce more vivid colours so landscapes and city scenes are as breathtaking as when seen in person.

.

Canon’s Scene Intelligent Auto mode analyses the scene being shot, taking into account faces, colours, brightness, movement and contrast, to select appropriate camera settings for the best possible image.

.

Creative fun for all levels

.

In Creative Auto Mode, the EOS M makes creative shooting easy by allowing inexperienced photographers to control certain elements of the image. When taking a portrait for example, the degree of “background blur” can be adjusted on screen using a sliding scale, eliminating the need to understand technical concepts such as aperture settings. Moreover, seven Creative Filters are a simple way to put a creative spin on everyday images at the press of a button.

Full HD EOS movie

.

The EOS M camera employs Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF system to deliver fast autofocus speed for both photos and videos. The Hybrid CMOS AF system truly shines when shooting video with EOS Full HD Movie mode including Movie Servo AF for continuous autofocus and tracking of moving subjects. Thanks to Canon’s new Stepping Motor (STM) technology, when using either of the new M-series lenses the AF system remains silent, helping ensure users only capture the sound of the scene being recorded. The EOS M also features a built-in stereo microphone, which includes an attenuator function to reduce audio distortion in extra loud situations.

.

New M-Series Lenses and Accessories

.

Along with the EOS M camera, Canon is also introducing a new series of lenses for the device that leverage Canon’s STM technology, allowing the lenses to smoothly and silently focus and, when used in combination with the Movie Servo AF feature, achieve continuous AF while recording video. The STM technology in both new lenses quietly achieves focus and allows the camera’s stereo microphone to only record the sounds of the scene being shot and not the whir of the AF typical in other interchangeable lens cameras.

.

The EOS M with EF Mount Adapter and EF lens

.

The EF-M 22mm f/2 STM ultra compact pancake lens is ideal for shooting still scenes such as family portraits or travel locations. The fixed focal length lens boasts an incredible aperture of f/2.0 and, when combined with the camera’s APS-C image sensor, provides beautiful background blur for both stills and video. For a bit more focal range versatility, Canon is also introducing the new EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom lens, which provides a great zoom range for general use with photographing or video recording family and friends. Both lenses are designed specifically for use with the EOS M camera.

.

In addition to the two lenses, any of Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses can be used with the EOS M camera with the optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS M. Using the adapter allows the camera to be fully integrated into the EOS ecosystem of more than 60 Canon EF and EF-S lenses, adding creative options and versatility to this powerful camera. Also, when shooting EOS movies, the adapter allows key features such as Movie Servo AF for continuous focus tracking of moving subjects to be used.

.

Ideal for use with the EOS M camera, Canon is also announcing a new compact and lightweight flash unit, the SpeedLite 90EX, designed for the photographer on the go. The SpeedLite 90EX is capable of coverage for 24mm wide angle lens shots, and has a guide number of 9 meters at ISO 100. The flash can wirelessly control slave units for creative multiple-flash shoots and uses the standard Canon EOS hotshoe mount for compatibility with all EOS DSLR cameras and PowerShot digital cameras that include a hotshoe.

.

Other optional accessories include the GP-E2 GPS receiver and the RC-6 Wireless Remote control unit. The EOS M is compatible with SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards, including new Ultra High Speed (UHS-I) cards.

.

The EOS M will be available through Canon retailers from early October 2012 in three configurations:

.

Body only with Mount Adapter EF-EOS M (EOS M body colour Black only)

Single IS Lens Kit (EOS M body in Black, bundled with 18-55 EF-M lens and the SpeedLite 90EX)

Pancake Twin Lens Kit (EOS M body in a choice of Black, Red or White, bundled with 18-55 EF-M lens, 22mm EF-M pancake lens and the SpeedLite 90EX)

.

Additionally, the new EF-M lenses and Mount Adapter EF-EOS M will be available for individual purchase. Pricing is set at dealer discretion. For more information, customers can contact Canon on 1800 021 167
