The Satimbe Mask

 

Of all the Dogon Dama masks, the Satimbe (the three masks in the middle) is perhaps my favorite. Satimbe means "superimposed sister" and refers to a woman named Yasigi who is the ancient ancestor who cultivated red hibiscus and used the fiber to make the skirts worn by the Dogon masked dancers. She is "superimposed" because of her position on top of the mask. In her left hand is a beer ladle, used in the making of millet beer.
