Zenkov Cathedral

The important historical role of the Russians in Central Asia is perhaps most evident in Kazakhstan, its nearest neighbor. This Russian Orthodox Church was designed in 1904 and remains one of Almaty's only remaining samples of tsarist-era architecture, the remainder having been destroyed by earthquakes. Although boarded up during the Soviet era, the cathedral is again a thriving church holding daily services.
