Tehran Carpet Museum

The Tehran Carpet Museum has a wealth of beautiful carpets and includes this piece which is a reproduction of the oldest known knotted carpet in the world. The original was excavated in Siberia in 1949 and now resides in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Radiocarbon dating places the carpet to the 5th century BCE, making it a work of the Achaemenid period. Based on the advanced design of this piece, carpet making may be as old as 3500 years in Iran.

from cairomessenger: The original is often referred to as the Pazyryk carpet, referencing the site from which it was excavated.
