Looking down into the valley of the Lycus River
This was the stretch of the walls known as the Mesoteichon, where the fighting was heaviest during the final siege in 1453. It was here the Ottomans finally overwhelmed the defenses and broke into the city. The Turkish flag flying from another tower at the top of the hill in the distance commemorates a second place (the Gate of the Kerkoporta) where the Turks also penetrated the walls on the night of the final assault.
