Petrojarl FOINAVEN 2022

This painting was started for my own amusement just before the owners announced the end for FPSO Petrojarl Foinaven. I've done several portraits of this subject in the last ten years. Occasionally, I've asked if I could do a sort of before & after portrait, not as popular an idea as you'd think, I always got a "No thanks." Anyway, the "ghost" in the background is the soviet era submarine tender Anadyr which was converted into the Foinaven in a Spanish shipyard. Putting it crudely, Anadyr was cut in half so a smallish oil refinery could be inserted into a lengthened hull, a helideck was added over a raised forecastle and a rotating turret manifold (the bit like an oil rig tower as we laymen might say, the risers from the oil wells connect to the vessel here) about which the rest of the ship could rotate as weather required. And that's how to make a Foinaven.
