A police officer informed me that those spiky icicles are called "hoar frost." We were discussing whether the frosty weather had set off our alarm system, and by the way, isn't it amazing how the weather is relevant to nearly every conversation? Maybe it's just me...In any case, I researched the term because I wasn't sure how to spell it, and I was curious about how it happens...

 

The Weather Network explains, "The word "hoar" comes from the Old English meaning grey or grey-ish- white, referring to the colour of hair in old age. Hoar frost forms under a clear sky on calm nights when ground objects cool rapidly. If the shallow layer of air near the ground cools below freezing and there is sufficient moisture in the air, water vapour deposits on the surface of cold objects as frost."
