According to local tradition, Hvitserkur was a troll of Strandir's coast. One evening, exasperated by the sound of the bells of the monastery of Þingeyrarklaustur, he decided to go and destroy the bells. But he had misjudged the distance of the bell tower and the sunrise surprised him before he was possible to reach a shelter. The rays of the sun petrified him forever.
