Bamburgh Castle
Bamburgh Castle occupies a strong defensive position on top of a long volcanic crag overlooking the North Sea The site served as the capital of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Bernicia but was destroyed by the Vikings in AD 993. Later the Normans built a castle on the site which evolved into a formidable border fortress. The castle was almost completely rebuilt in the nineteenth century and is a grade 1 listed building.
