Scot Ventoux 1961
by drpaddle
I purchased this bike in San Diego from the original owner, Mal Jaeger. It was in a collapsed shed in his backyard. He was disabled and unaware for many months that the shed had collapsed. He shared the stories of his life in cycling and his acquisition of this bike.
Mal was a very active cyclist in Brooklyn, NY. Rode a red Bianchi there 1932-1933. Rode with the Shore Road Wheelmen and worked for the Bicycle Club of Brooklyn 1943 to 1946. Enlisted in the Navy and took the Bianchi to his construction battalion in Atsugi, Japan, circa 1950.
Mal was stationed at Sandbank Scotland with a US submarine tender during the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962). It was in that period that he went to Glasgow and had this bike built to his specifications at Rattray's. (He also visited Claud Butler and purchased a tandem, which I also acquired.) He cycled from his residence in Dunoon to Sandbank regularly.
Mal was stationed with the Shore Patrol in Guantanamo Bay (probably 1960s) where he cycled around the base. Said that Raul Castro told him personally to leave Cuba.
Mal rode with San Diego AYH, Torrey Pines Ski Club, and Dr. Graves in the late '60s.
Mal's name is carefully lettered in tiny script on the top tube.
