Title: Pensive Gaze Model: Vanessa Davis
In the past, I have attended and appreciated the Grande Parade of Toronto’s Caribbean Caribana Festival. This beautiful festival is a celebration of Caribbean culture and traditions held each summer within Toronto, attracting millions around the world. However, the last three years I have been given the opportunity to experience the festival on a different level with my camera in tow to capture many extraordinary moments.
I was also honoured and proud to be a part of the INKWELL PROJECT, a partnership between designer Candice Dixon, business manager Dwayne Dixon of SugaCayne, in association with Venom and Ryerson University’s Design Fabrication Zone. This phenomenal costume design was created from this partnership. This photo is from my series taken during one of the Royal Ontario Museum’s Friday Night Live Event.
What intrigued me most alongside the vibrancy of the costumes were the compelling and striking expressions of human emotion and character evoked by the masqueraders. Though most were strangers to me, I felt a sense of benevolence, tenderness, fierceness and strength within many of the women celebrating the festival.
