Cartmel Priory East Window

The large and beautiful east window, which almost fills the east wall, still retains its 15th century stained glass. Three of the large lights, and sections of the upper tracery contain the medieval glass which was painstakenly pieced together from fragments.(presumeably after the whole was smashed up during The Dissolution.) The window depicts an archbishop, the Virgin, and St John Baptist.

The rest of the glass is early 17th c. and full of "natural" colours.

I'd intended to concentrate on some exterior studies of Cartmel Priory's unique, "Square within a Square" tower, but after a couple of general shots, the sun vanished into solid cloud for the rest of the day.

The last time I'd visited, tripods were not allowed inside, so I didn't expect to take anything. However the rule had changed and I only had to persuade them that I wasn't a professional, or I'd have had to pay a fee. (That wasn't so straightforward, with a black "professional looking" tripod and a long "white" lens!)
