Sunderland Corporation Transport 53 (FBR53D) - 05-05-19 (03)
Preserved former Sunderland Corporation Transport Strachan bodied Leyland Panther, 53 (FBR53D), seen here on display at the North East Bus Preservation Trust's North East Bus and Coach Show at the Gateshead Metrocentre on the 5th May 2019.
Although the Leyland Panther was not a great success elsewhere, Sunderland Corporation had a great liking for the type, purchasing batches in 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1970 as part of a large scale modernisation of the fleet. Smaller numbers of Daimler Roadliners, Bristol REs and AEC Swifts were also bought - the 1966 to '68 orders all carrying bodies built to the design specifications of the Corporation's General Manager, Mr Norman Morton, featuring stylish sloping window pillars as seen here illustrated by Panther 53.
