Françoise Lucas says:
The chair as object on display
The chair is behind a glass pane. It seems beyond reach as a work of art would be. The doorcase on the left functions as a frame and pushes forward the idea of the chair as a work of art. The horizontal line seems to question this whole idea however. The chair is barred. The frame that is placed behind the chair seems to emphasize even more this questioning. It seems that it is the notion of the work of art that is at stake here. The frame is placed behind the object. It does'nt frame it totally. It is detached from the object as well. The function of the frame, here, is not to surround the object as a frame. Its function seems to be to question the notion of the work of art as art.
Françoise Lucas says:
The rectangle of light in the middle catches your eye. You compose the image while pointing to the viewer the geometrical forms of the pavement. The light enhances the separation between the tiles. The stairs and the two vertical lines signify geometry too. The image is deictic, and lead us to a vanishing point located in the rectangle of light in the middle of the image. The perspective is flawed, however. We cannot see what is behind the light.
