Where Rail meets Sail!

In Superior, Wis. on June 23, 1983, CN SD40 5019 is heading up the Milwaukee Road run-through train from the Twin Cities heading to Duluth for interchange with the Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific. The train is stopped holding for Amtrak's North Star coming out of Duluth. In the background is the steamer William A. McGonagle loading at the grain terminal, while in the far background I believe is US Steel's Eugene W. Pargny in permanent layup. It will be scrapped in 1984, while the McGonagle, renamed Henry Steinbrenner, will go into layup in 1989 and be scrapped in 1994. I simply walked out on the bridge to shoot the passenger train and this freight with the crew just giving me a wave - can't do that today!
