Bye Bye Builder!
I've long had the tradition of trying to shoot Amtrak train 7, the westbound Empire Builder, during the longest days of the year when you can get it along the Mississippi River. This tradition will come to an end July 11, when Amtrak makes the Chicago departure nearly an hour later, putting it pretty much in darkness along the river even on the longest days. Here's the Builder heading into the setting sun at Maple Springs, Minn. The good news is by this time next year there should be a second Amtrak running between Chicago and St. Paul, setting up new possibilities for shooting Amtrak along the Mississippi.
