Overnight Shark hunt
In August 1979, the Escanaba & Lake Superior leased the Sharknose's from their owner, Castolite, Inc. after their service on the Michigan Northern. The 1205 was unserviceable, but the 1216 was operational, and for a few weeks E&LS used it in service on its line from Wells to Channing.
I wanted to shoot it, so I drove overnight from St. Paul to Escanaba. Then I chased the train west to Channing, where it was turned on the wye from the trip back to Wells, seen here passing a set of Milwaukee Road Fs at the Channing engine house.
I then chased the train back to Ralph, Mich., where I turned around and drove west to St. Paul, and promptly went to work at my job at Northwest Airlines on the overnight shift. Two days with no sleep - but it was worth it! I could never do that today!
