D&NE on a great day!

You know how so often we have lousy days taking pictures? Well, every once in a while it all comes together, and this was one of those days. It was Sept. 10, 1977, and it was one of those warm, blue sky September days we all hope for. The Duluth & Northeastern cooperated on this sunny Saturday by running their turn from Cloquet to Saginaw, Minn., seen here at the Hwy 33 crossing behind SW1000 No. 35, several cars for the DM&IR, and a wood ex-Missabe caboose. At Saginaw the engine crew joined the rear end crew for the traditional lunch in the caboose, then headed home to Cloquet. I chased the train back, then went after the DM&IR, which still had double track on the Missabe Division and (almost) new SD38s. It was a great day - and I still have them today, with different subjects. While this part of the D&NE is torn up, luckily the 35 is still around, now wearing red as Cloquet Terminal 35.
