It's nice to see a man enjoy his work
A summer evening's entertainment at Eureka's Friday Night Market. See Humboldt Juggling Society for more info about the performers.
The large sign in the background honors Romano Gabriel, an Italian immigrant to Eureka, who created a "wooden garden" in the front yard of his home on Pine Street. He built and painted an extensive assortment of wooden figures from vegetable crates to express his attitudes about public figures, society, and institutions. They were meant to be seen from the street, not the house, and were enjoyed by locals for decades. After the artist's death in 1977 the Eureka Heritage Society raised the funds to erect a building (seen here) to preserve and display the local treasures. A few of the sculptures can be seen in the window. Eureka: An Architectural Review (© 1987) says "Today the Wooden Garden is preserved for the benefit and enjoyment of all Eurekans."
