Sun Bath, 1914

Philip Leslie Hale

Oil on canvas

Chrysler Museum of Art

The shallow space of the composition, the brillian sunlight reflecting off white garments, and the strange poses of the women in "Sun Bath" suggest a theatrical performance. The flowers are hollyhocks and they echo the billowing white sheaths that the women wear to bathe in the sun in the suburban backyard. Hale often made photographic composition studies that helped him achieve the balance between figures and flowers in his paintings.
