Michael Schumacher - 2010 Canadian Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher negotiating the turn 10 hairpin at the 2010 Grand Prix du Canada. I like this picture very much. I panned the Mercedes as it accelerated away from the apex and turned right.
This image really asked alot of the equipment I was using. I was panning the subject , which changed direction, accelerated towards me and moving at a decent pace. Without an image stablization lens, I was surprised I was able to get this image, the Nikon D300s did a good job of tracking the car while focusing with a old type screw drive autofocus in the lens. Shot at 1/60 of a second, f11, 185mm (277mm equivalent) using 80-200mm 2.8D supported by a monopod. Due to the directions, axis of the subject and the relatively slow shutter speed, it took multiple shots of multiple passes to grab this image.
There is motion all around, yet Michael's Helmet is sharp. The contrast is quite unique here; the car is silver, the tires are black and the tarmac is some where in between - all flat looking, then the bright red helmet of Michael Schumacher.
