Q is for Quartz
Quartz is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silicon and oxygen atoms. It is the second most abundant mineral in Earth's continental crust, behind feldspar.
My mother was an avid Rock Hound, belonged to a Rock & Mineral Society which met monthly and held dozens of field trips all over the US. She went on most of those trips, bringing home tons of specimens, filling up many book cases and two china cabinets.
Here is a close up of a Quartz specimen displayed in one of those cases.
