Arg-e Bam , Iran (Citadel of Bam, Unesco world heritage)

This photo is a scan from a slide which I made in 1999.
The ancient citadel of Arg-e Bam ( ارگ بم ) has a history dating back for more than 2000 years. The origins of Bam can be traced back to the Achaemenid period (6th to 4th centuries BC). Its heyday was from the 7th to 11th centuries, being at the crossroads of important trade routes and known for the production of silk and cotton garments. The city was largely abandoned due to an Afghan invasion in 1722. Subsequently, after the city had gradually been re-settled, it was abandoned a second time due to an attack by invaders from Shiraz.
On December 26 2003 Bam was struck by an earthquake of 6.6 on the Richter scale. The earthquake was particularly destructive, with a death toll of about 30.000 people.
The earthquake destroyed this city.
In 2004 however, it was placed on the UNESCO world heritage list and it will be rebuilt. (I don't know how the progress is at the moment)
