This church was built in 1605. It was one of the first churches in the Netherlands built by the protestants. In 1647 the church was expanded into the present cruciform church. It is the only church on the island of Vlieland.

The organ is from around 1780 and the builder of the organ is unknown. In 1879 it came to Vlieland.

In 1997 the current church existed 350 years. On this occasion it was decided to call the church "Nicolaaskerk". The name Nicholas church is historically not correct though.
