The Beemster Polder was created in 1612. Before that time, it was a lake. It is located in the province of North Holland, north of Amsterdam. The draining of this lake was the first large project and therefore one of the first polders. This polder was designed in a geometric pattern, according to the principles of that time, the Renaissance. Nowadays it is a well-ordered agricultural landscape of fields, roads, canals, ditches, dykes and villages.

In 1999 the Beemster polder was added to the Unesco world heritage list.
