The conical-roofed shrine is believed to contain the tomb of Sheikh Adi ibn Musafir, the most important saint in Yazidi religion. The Yazidi consider him an avatar of Tawûsê Melek, which means "Peacock Angel".
His tomb at Lalish, Kurdistan, is a focal point of Yazidi pilgrimage.
Most Yazidis live in the Nineveh province of Northern Iraq, Iraqi Kurdistan.
Throughout their history, the Yazidi were always heavily persecuted. The latest was in 2014, when Daesh (ISIS) killed many Yazidis and kidnapped girls, young women and boys. Boys to be brainwashed and trained as warriors and girls to be sold as (sex)slaves. The genocide caused many Yazidis to be forced to leave their ancestral lands in Northern Iraq.
