Glimp of time in Iceland
He knew he couldnt stay any longer he was staying with poor people, in an old shack. As he got ready to leave to look for another place to stay he was given a bit of food to take with him and was given directions to head east. That would bring him over the river.
What I am describing now is a glimpse into the mind of a homeless wanderer, more than a century ago. They went from farm to farm, asking for shelter. They spendt 5 days at each farm and serve as a sort of entertainment and a bearer of news from other parts. They were therefore always welcome, as it could be quite difficult to get news.
He continued his travels, heading east. The cold was nearly overwhelming. Daylight lasted for only 4 hours during the daytime. It had started go get dark when he got to the big river. He knew it was a dangerous part of the journey despite the icy capsule. He ventured out on to the ice and heard
the creaking sound made by the weight of his steps. Large icebergs that had broken off from the glacier at the top of the river had broken off and were now trapped, frozen in time as it were. But he knew that the ice was not safe near to them. He walked away from them. When he was midway over the icy river he saw a fantastic light in the sky. He had never seen anything like this. He became scared, was this a bad omen or were they
demons and creatures from the underworld coming for him? He hurried to get across the ice but in his panic went too near to one of the icebergs and fell through the ice into the river. What painful cold! He could feel the icy water overtaking his voluntary movements. He knew that if he was more than 4 minutes in the water that would be the end of him. He managed to crawled back up to the ice and away from the opening in the ice. As he looked back and saw the northern lights reflect their green ghost-like glow in the water and the large iceberg against the sky, he realised that he had to find shelter soon, if not it would be the end of him.
