American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee
Immigration Cartoon, 1938
Between 1933 and 1940, some 9,000 European Jewish refugees arrived in Australia. As the Jewish community grew, so too did anti-foreign sentiment within the country. As this cartoon from 1938 depicts, many Australians feared the increasing number of foreigners (especially Jews) who appeared to be ‘leaking in’ through the perceived cracks in Australia’s immigration policy.
