Wallace Chapman & Alice Ethel Isham Mace

What’s going on here? It looks like the man on the left is taking sweeping measures against a panhandler. Maybe they’re both taking on Vermont’s notorious black flies.

I purchased this photograph from Vintage Inspired Lifestyle Marketplace in South Burlington, Vermont on September 15, 2023. The only annotations on the photo were the names Alice Mace, and Wallace Chapman. There is no date or geographic reference.

I bought the photograph because I found it amusing, and considered there was too little information to conduct a search. A different photograph I bought at the time had the name Alice Isham on the reverse. While researching Alice Isham in Vermont, I found a 1920 census entry for Alice Mace, née Isham, in Williston, Vermont.

Using this geographical reference, I searched Williston for Wallace Chapman, and found him as well. Newspaper articles about Alice Isham were posted under the village of St. George. She was listed in the 1910 Williston, Vermont census as Alice Mace, married three years to Roscoe Mace and living with her parents, Hiram and Harriet Isham, along with their infant son, Howard.

The light-hearted antics in the photograph belie the tragedies to come for these two folks. Between 1910 and 1920, Alice lost two children in infancy and a son in WWII. Wallace’s barn and silo burned to the ground in 1914 with little insurance to cover the loss. He later sold the farm and moved to the village. Research is continuing apace. I am seeking descendants.
