Children's calligraphy. Whereas adult calligraphy usually consists of lengthy literary quotations, these children have written short phrases or single words, some in hiragana (Japanese phonetic script), some in kanji (Chinese characters), some combining both. (Modern Japanese is written with a combination of kanji, hiragana and katakana, the latter being an alternate phonetic script used mainly to transliterate foreign and scientific words.)
Take the third horizontal row from the top, for example, going from right to left. The first sheet at the right end is written with two kanji, Spring and Fall (春秋, shunjū). Moving left and skipping one, the next is written with two large hiragana, Dreams (ゆめ, yume). Continuing leftward, the translations are: Clouds (くも, kumo), Picture Book (えほん, ehon), Autumn Festival (秋まつり, aki matsuri), Little Jewel (小さい玉, chiisai tama), The Dragon Rises (龍興, ryūkyō), (skip one), Face (かお, kao), Plovers (ちどり, chidori), Morning Snow (朝のゆき, asa no yuki), The Power to Live (生きる力, ikiru chikara), Man and Nature (人と自然, hito to shizen). Writing in vertical columns goes from right to left, in both Japanese and Chinese.
