I made a home-brew speed controller from a schematic I found online. It's based around a 555 timer to drive the motor using pulse width modulation. The speed is adjustable using a potentiometer which sticks up through the top of the project box. Works great except for the 1kHz whine it causes. Oh well, I don't need to run it for very long. The whole thing is powered by a used ATX power supply I picked up at the thrift store for a few dollars.
