peacock katydid I

Peacock katydid (Pterochroza ocellata) - Yasuni National park, Ecuador

A large katydid that at first glance looks just like a dead leaf, however if you take a second glance and the katydid feels in danger suddenly a different tactic becomes apparent. It opens its wings, flashing bright colors and doubling in size in the blink of an eye, it then keeps its wings open as it hops away. During this display the katydid tries very hard to point its posterior in the direction of the threat both so it can jump away and so that the bright colors can dazzle a would be predator. This shot is obviously from the front but I'll post another of the backside tomorrow or the day after.
