Lirellus Leaf
Pristimantis lirellus - San Martin Department, Peru
This is Pristimantis lirellus, a species defined as 'Data Deficient' by the IUCN. What that means is that we know so little about this species that we can't say whether it is in trouble or flourishing. Sadly, rare species that we don't know much about are much more frequently doing poorly than well. This is because of a variety of threats; habitat loss and degradation as well as disease to name just a few potential threats. This species is currently only known from 3 locales in the San Martin department in Northern Peru. Only known from the Eastern slopes of Cordillera Central it does occupy a relatively wide altitudinal range so its possible further surveying will result in more localities for this species.
