Splash Zone

Marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) - Santiago island, Galapagos National Park, Ecuador

Seeing these majestic lizards lounge on the lava was one thing, seeing them moving through the water and along the waters edge getting washed over by waves was something else! I really enjoyed photograhing this marine iguana who had picked a perch that was out of the reach of most waves, but occasionally a bigger swell would come in and soak the lizard whose only reaction was to close his eyes before the water hit. These iguanas are certainly no stranger to water, they are the only marine iguanas and their diet is entirely made up of algae that grows both in the splash zone and even underwater, where these lizards will dive down to in order to feed.
