Nighttime Bark Scorpion

Bark Scorpion (Centruroides gracilis) - Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, Belize

While I can't say that I know a great deal about them I have always enjoyed seeing wild scorpions. I saw plenty of this species in Belize, including one right next to my strung up hammock. Centruroides is a widespread genus with about 70 species, some members of this genus are highly venomous and have caused fatalities. However, this species, C. gracilis, is downright cuddly in comparison as its not nearly as toxic as many of its congeners and is reluctant to sting. However depsite its weaker venom I wouldn't want to get stung, their venom is neurotoxic and cardiotoxic and while serious side effects are uncommon it still wouldn't be a pleasant experience. All the members I saw of this species were up off the ground on the sides of trees and palms and all were out at night with the exception of one. The individual I saw during the day was actually a small individual dragged out of its hiding place by a large katydid that it had seized. As I watched the scorpion subdued the katydid despite being about half the size, unfortunately I did not get any photos as the entire thing was happening abut 4 feet above my head on the side of a palm.
