Jungle Mouse

Large Pencil-tailed Tree Mouse (Chiropodomys major) - Danum Valley, Malaysia

A particularly photogenic mouse stops scrambling through the vegetation and takes a second to look at me. These mice live off a mostly vegetarian diet and keep to the trees. The reading I have done states that Chiropodomys is in general an uncommon and seldom studied genus, in contrast I found these mice to be relatively common in the jungle at night. Atleast this was the case during the second field season, during my first field season I never encountered them, its anecdotal evidence but I think perhaps because it was a mast year with many trees producing fruit and seeds that these mice were easier to encounter as they moved around looking for food.
