Feihyla

White-eared Tree Frog (Feihyla [Rhacophorus] kajau) - Danum Valley, Malaysia

Until recently this frog was in the Rhacophorus genus but has been moved to Feihyla. They are found in the lowland jungles of North and West Borneo and are always found near streams. Interestingly I must have observed this species in 3 or 4 different locations in very low densities (1 or 2 individuals encountered over the course of months) and I found one stream that was outwardly the same as the others but had very high density of these frogs and I was consistently able to see a large amount (more than all the rest of my sightings put together) of these frogs there when I visited during the right conditions. They are outwardly rather similar to glass frogs from the new world, small green with translucent skin, the similarity does not stop with appearance either. Just like the glass frog species I have encountered these frogs are found in the same sort of microhabitats and also lay their eggs on vegetation overhanging pools of water. This little frog is from a stream that I frequently visited but this was the only F. kajau that I ever encountered there, it was sitting exactly as you see here in this photo when I came across it and it didn't budge for the whole photoshoot.
