Leyland National publicity and models
A display at the North West Museum of Road Transport. The Leyland National in its original Mark 1 form blighted my personal memory of the 1970s - it was the ‘Leyland Nazi’ in my books. Developed in conjunction with the infant National Bus Company, it entered production in 1972 and large numbers painted in dreary corporate poppy red or leaf green swamped the NBC fleets.
After trialling six early production Leyland Nationals, London Transport took substantial numbers between 1976 and 1978. The publicity photograph shows LT’s LS7 (KJD507P), the first of an order of 50 vehicles that opened the floodgates to larger-scale Leyland National operation in London.
