Grumman F4F Wildcat

This US naval fighter first saw combat service with the Royal Naval Fleet Air Arm a full year before the United States entered World War II. Facing the Japanese, the type was outclassed by the Mitsubishi A4M Zero, but held its own because it was better armoured and had self-sealing fuel tanks.
