JFK Pinto

Seen in the parking lot outside the TWA Hotel, this is not a car I encounter in daily use or even see at classic car events. Although it sold well initially after its 1970 introduction, the Ford Pinto’s reputation was tarnished by a serious and avoidable design flaw - the wish by Ford executives to save $9 per car by locating the fuel tank behind the rear axle rather than ahead of it. The model earned the unwelcoming ‘exploding Pinto’ nickname because of its performance in rear-end collisions.
