The Fuchsias revisited
A rear view of a fine house that was acquired by the University of Hull during the 1960s for student accommodation. Some 15 of us were shoehorned in there, most of us sharing rooms. The dormer window at the top marks the attic, shared by Charles and me in 1971/72.
It was a very exhilarating time for us all, and we had to cater for ourselves - learning the rudiments of cooking proved a handy exercise in gaining a useful life skill. I actually enjoyed preparing a simple meal as a welcome relief from the intensity of studying and essay writing.
We forged very deep and enduring friendships from our shared time in The Fuchsias. I was deeply saddened by the untimely passing of my old room-mate Charles at the age of 63. He was one of the finest and kindest people I have ever known. But I have remained in touch with other housemates. I emailed a copy of this photo a few days earlier to three friends, all of us now scattered to the winds - two of us in the United States, the others in France and Sweden. It was a delight to swap the memories. Hard to believe though that we are all in our 70s now.
