ALCO activity

We were heading towards Scranton’s Steamtown National Historic Site, encountering this pair of vintage ALCO diesel locomotives performing switching duties. I had assumed that the pair were providing demonstrations for Steamtown museum visitors but discovered that the locos had no connection with Steamtown but were in fact earning their keep for the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad (DL). This is a shortline railroad that forms part of the Genesee Valley Transportation Co. (GVT) empire. Scranton is the main DL hub. Among railfans, the DL is famed as a last bastion of ALCO diesel locomotives that are between 50-60 years old.

Against the backdrop of an impressive signal tower, the loco in front is #2461, an ALCO C425. It is coupled to #405, an ALCO C420. Both locomotives were new in 1964, five years before ALCO ceased construction of new locomotives in the United States.
