Standard ECML fare

Although the Class 55 Deltic locomotives were the popular showpieces of the East Coast Mainline InterCity services, the predominant haulage was by the less charismatic and far more numerous Class 47 locomotives. A versatile class that numbered a total of 512 units, many rail enthusiasts were unenamoured with the commonplace 47s, bestowing them with the derogatory nickname of ‘Duffs’. I had no quarrel with the breed, I liked their clean lines, and was happy to photograph this unidentified example heading an ECML express with perfect competence north of Potters Bar.
