The A Stock’s other stamping ground
For half a century, London Underground’s A60/A62 Metropolitan Line stock threaded its way among the upscale North West London and Home Counties suburbs, with termini at Watford, Chesham and Amersham. The Metropolitan Railway also provided the rolling stock for the East London Line between Shoreditch and New Cross/New Cross Gate after it was electrified in 1913. This line became part of the London Underground network in 1933.
The A Stock was only drafted into East London Line service in the 1980s, 4-car units providing the service along the 5.6 mile route. I captured this view of 5060 approaching Surrey Quays Station on a northbound service. These trains terminated at Whitechapel, with only peak-hour M-F trains going to the end of the line at Shoreditch.
