Manatee refuge
The TECO power plant at Apollo Beach draws water from Tampa Bay for cooling and then returns it after scrubbing. The water is still warm as it gets recirculated, drawing pods of manatees into the discharge canal as they seek winter warmth. Viewing platforms and a visitor centre have been provided for the public to view the spectacle. The facility is supervised by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Committee (FWC).
