The ‘monstrous masses of shivering tin’ remembered
Edinburgh Corporation Transport eliminated its trams with batches of Leyland Titan PD2/20s, some 150 of which were procured between 1954- 57. The buses did not meet with overwhelming public approval, one Bailie (councillor) declaring them to be “monstrous masses of shivering tin.” I can endorse that the buses’ Metropolitan-Cammell Orion bodywork was very spartan inside. The breed was getting thinned out at the time of my earliest visits to Edinburgh, but they were still plentiful on the city’s streets. Here ECT 776 (OFS776) has turned from Princes Street into Leith Street on its way to Granton.
