Frenemies Reunited

Seen side-by-side at Steamtown Carnforth were the two top-link locomotives whose respective abilities were tested in the locomotive exchanges of 1925. 4472 Flying Scotsman and 4079 Pendennis Castle represented the best in British locomotive design, and 4472’s designer H.N. Gresley was curious to see how his design compared with the Great Western’s Castle Class locomotives of similar power. Representatives of the two types ran on one another’s metals, Pendennis Castle generally being deemed the better performer in terms of time keeping and coal/water economy. Paying heed of the lessons learned, Gresley upgraded his LNER A1 Pacific class with revised valve gear and boiler pressure, thereby creating a highly effective locomotive class.

At the date of this photograph, 4079 Pendennis Castle was making her final UK appearances before shipment to Australia, where she spent some 30 years prior to a return to the UK. She was joined Down Under in 1988-90 by 4472 Flying Scotsman, which toured Australia as part of the country’s bicentennial celebrations.
