Schaffnerlos

Vienna operates the largest tram system in Western Europe. For many years, the backbone of the Vienna tram fleet was this classic DüWag design, built under licence in Austria. I was long puzzled by the ‘Schaffnerlos’ sticker, having only a weak knowledge of the German language. I eventually learned that it meant ‘No Conductor’: these trams were now one person-operated, having dispensed with the old system of passengers paying a conductor seated at a desk as they boarded.
