BART
Taking the BART train to SFO, and a quick token photo in the open air at Balboa Park station. BART is Bay Area Rapid Transit, a subway system introduced in 1972 to connect San Francisco with San Jose and Oakland, serving San Francisco International Airport (SFO) as well. The trains run on an Indian broad gauge (5ft 6in, 1676mm) track, giving the cars a noticeably wider look. The leading unit in the train here is a C Car, built by Alstom (as seen here) and Morrison-Knudsen between 1987-96, recognisable by their flat-fronted profiles compared with the sloping fronts of the earlier A and B cars. These units are all in course of replacement by new-generation trains built by Bombardier.
