My first Cobham
This line-up of vintage London Transport double-deckers at the old London Bus Preservation Trust premises in Cobham greeted me on the occasion of my first visit more than 40 years ago. The LBPT evolved into the London Bus Museum and moved to today’s purpose-built premises in Weybridge, but the group’s annual open days during April became a fixture in my calendar during next 35 years. I think I missed only three events during that period, all due to travel overseas.
It was a mention on Capital Radio that original Sunday morning that prompted me to make immediate tracks to Cobham: the radio station had bought an old RT bus earlier in the1970s and was set to attend for promotional purposes. The big appeal of the event was the chance to ride on favourite ex-London classics. In subsequent years, Cobham running days became ever more ambitious, and I duly became a member of the London Bus Museum. Happy days indeed.
The green bus is noteworthy and fondly remembered from its time operating with Grimsby Cleethorpes Transport. It is a postwar member of the STL class, based during its nine-year stint with London Transport at Watford.
